The ABCs of Cleaning Schools

7/30/2023 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of East Nashville's Cleaning Image of school hallway

As the new school year approaches, educational institutions, from preschools to colleges, are bustling with anticipation and excitement. However, before students and staff return, schools must thoroughly clean and sanitize to ensure a safe and healthy environment. Weeks and months of closed-up buildings and inactivity contribute to accumulating dirt, mold, and stale air. Every surface, from ceilings to floors and everything in between, must be scrubbed, and every room and area must be aired out.

Commercial cleaning services play a crucial role in this process, implementing best practices to maintain cleanliness, promote hygiene, and reduce the spread of illnesses. In this blog, let's explore the best practices that commercial cleaning services like SERVPRO meticulously follow when preparing schools for a new school year.

Developing a Comprehensive Cleaning Plan

Professional commercial cleaning services collaborate closely with school administrators or other staff to develop a detailed, comprehensive cleaning plan. This plan should identify high-traffic areas, high-touch areas, establish cleaning frequency schedules, and outline specific tasks and responsibilities. Commercial cleaning services can efficiently allocate staff and resources to ensure consistent and thorough cleaning throughout the premises by customizing the plan to the school's unique needs.

The SERVPRO team will begin a school cleaning project with a strategy. First, we walk through the school to assess needs and create a detailed cleaning plan. We then note areas of heavy grime buildup, such as entranceways, hallways, bathrooms, gyms, breakrooms, and the cafeteria, check for mold or mildew issues in locker rooms and around sinks and toilets, create a checklist ranking cleaning tasks from high to low priority, and schedule sufficient time to complete the work.

SERVPRO will address the following items:

Thoroughly Clean and Disinfect All Surfaces: A new school year demands a deep and comprehensive cleaning process. Cleaners focus on disinfecting high-touch surfaces such as doorknobs, handrails, desks, chairs, light switches, and shared equipment like keyboards, mouses, remotes, and headphones. Surfaces must be cleaned thoroughly with appropriate cleaning agents and disinfectants to eliminate germs, bacteria, and viruses.

Pay Special Attention to Restrooms, Locker Rooms, and Other Germ Hotspots: Restrooms, mirrors, lockers, locker rooms, gyms and workout rooms, teachers’ lounges and breakrooms, and nurses’ offices are prime breeding grounds for bacteria and viruses. General cleaning services should give special attention to restrooms, ensuring they are cleaned and disinfected multiple times a day. Adequate supplies of soap, hand sanitizers, and paper towels should be stocked, and regular maintenance checks should be conducted to ensure the proper functioning of fixtures, plumbing, and ventilation systems. It is also important to remember that nurses' offices, gyms, or sports areas may harbor biohazards like blood, so it is wise to employ commercial cleaning services with expertise and equipment for dealing with such substances.

Cafeteria Cleaning: Food prep areas require detailed cleaning and must follow public health protocols. Commercial cleaning services clean and sanitize preparation tables, serving counters, food storage areas, and kitchen appliances. SERVPRO also empties and cleans refrigerators and freezers, cleans and de-greases ovens, stoves, and hood vents, sweeps and mops floors with a disinfectant cleaner, and removes trash and wipes down bins.

Deep Clean Floors, Carpets, and Windows: Floors, carpets, mats, and windows often bear the brunt of heavy foot traffic and accumulate dust, dirt, stains, and allergens. Professional floor cleaning services use appropriate cleaning methods such as using HEPA vacuuming, mopping, or steam cleaning to remove embedded dirt and stains. Cleaning tall windows can improve natural light and enhance the overall ambiance of classrooms and common areas, thus making them more conducive to an exceptional learning environment.

Proper Waste Management: Efficient waste management is vital to maintaining cleanliness and preventing the spread of germs. Cleaning services should ensure that waste bins are strategically placed throughout the school, regularly emptied, and properly sanitized. The school should provide separate bins for recyclable materials to encourage responsible waste disposal and commitment to sustainability.

Focus on Indoor Air Quality: Clean indoor air is essential for a healthy learning environment. Professional HVAC cleaning services pay attention to air vents, HVAC systems, and air filters, cleaning or replacing them regularly. Effective ventilation systems help reduce the concentration of airborne contaminants, ensuring students and staff breathe in fresh, clean air.

Preparing schools for a new academic year requires professional commercial cleaning services to implement best practices that promote cleanliness, hygiene, and safety. By developing a comprehensive cleaning plan, paying attention to high-touch surfaces, and focusing on air quality, cleaning services can effectively contribute to a healthy learning environment. The collaboration between commercial cleaning services and school administrators is key to ensuring that all necessary measures are taken, providing students and staff with a safe and clean educational space for the upcoming year.

Animal Safety During Remediation

SERVPRO of East Nashville, Madison/Goodlettsville

During a home remediation project, you might find that your pet is scared, nervous, or in danger. This is why SERVPRO wants to make sure all aspects of your home and family are safe. SERVPRO has been proven effective in the field of home restoration due to its dedication to animal care when it comes to service calls.

If you know you'll have people coming in and out of the house for any reason, make sure that your pet is in a safe place. You can also ask for assistance when taking your pet outside to relieve itself.

Try to keep your pet in a room that is familiar to them. Give your pet plenty of toys to play with and feed them in their usual place. For some pets, it's best to just leave them in the room. Try to provide hiding places for your pet in case they feel scared or need to take cover from anything stressful. Try not to overwhelm your pet with attention because this could make them too anxious or stressed out.

Ensure the animal communicates with the stranger before you attempt to introduce them to one another. If your pet doesn't have a lot of experience around other animals, then give them time to grow accustomed to their surroundings first. This way they are more likely to feel comfortable roaming around the home without feeling too unsure.

In addition, to making sure that your pets are safe during a home remediation project, SERVPRO has also been proven effective in the field of home restoration due to its dedication to animal care when it comes to service calls.

SERVPRO is committed to catering to the needs of animals and their owners. They will work with you on a customized plan for your home and pets, which may cover a variety of areas from escape routes to new furniture.

SERVPRO is committed to your satisfaction with our services and wants you to know that we will always treat your pets as if they were our own.

Historic Edgefield in East Nashville looks to SERVPRO for their restoration needs

The East Nashville we all know and love might not be what it is today if it weren’t for the Great Fire of 1916. It was the worst fire in the history of Tennessee until the 2016 Smoky Mountain Fires. The 1916 fire ate a path three blocks wide and more than two miles long. Nearly 650 buildings burned and three thousand people in the city’s most affluent neighborhood became homeless overnight.  More than 100 years after this tragic event, residential and commercial properties are still in the process of rebuilding as they turn to SERVPRO East Nashville for help.

The Great East Nashville Fire of 1916

The story of the Great East Nashville Fire of 1916 begins with every available firefighting apparatus in the city responding to the fire on March 22, 1916 at Seagraves & Co. planing mill. In a flash, the building and the pine lumber within it flared, consuming electric poles and burning nearby homes. The high winds carried the flames through Edgefield, scorching every garage, outhouse and servants cabin and laying waste to 35 blocks of mostly residential property.

For five long hours Nashville fought the fire. Around 4:30 p.m. the flames were finally brought under control, but the damage was severe. The end result was total losses in the neighborhood of $1.5 million, ($34 million today).

SERVPRO of East Nashville, Madison, Goodlettsville - Why should you check walls for cracks?

11/5/2020 (Permalink)

Older houses and new builds all have their host of accents that we were not expecting. Often the sight of a crack makes homeowners cringe with fear. SERVPRO in East Nashville wants to try and help you understand why not all cracks are a homeowner’s worst nightmare.

The only way to truly determine the impact of a crack that you have found in your home is to hire a professional (expert) to physically examine the issue. However, you may have the ability to examine and determine if the crack that you have uncovered deserves more attention.

Houses often settle within a short period of time after being constructed, although, the settling process can also take years. So we recommend you keep an eye out for cracks that may show up in your home. Small minor wall cracks are normally the sign of the gentle settling process of a home after construction. If you see horizontal crack lines, gaping cracks, and separation - this may need your attention and can be signs of more major issues.

In the event that you notice a vertical crack on your wall that is beginning at the top (apex) of where your wall and ceiling meet - this is normally a sign of a settling issue. However, a horizontal crack that has more of a jagged appearance - this can be a more dire situation and can be a sign that you have foundation shifting - or water damage.

If the crack you find has a stair-step appearance (running both horizontal and vertical) - this can be a situation that happens if you have an unfinished basement. The stair-stepping crack has the potential to be a result of soil settling beneath the center of your wall.

At SERVPRO we recommend that you call an engineer to properly determine what a crack that you have found truly means. After an inspection - if it is determined that you have water damage or dealing with the aftermath of a storm - please call SERVPRO in East Nashville at (615) 488-8670.

Know What to Ask Your Restoration Company | SERVPRO® of Wilson County

8/26/2019 (Permalink)

The complications of property damage are extensive, and for business owners, they could impact their livelihood. After a disaster, up to 60% of businesses are unable to reopen as reported by FEMA.

It is essential for business owners to resume operations as quickly as possible, and working with a commercial restoration company that’s trustworthy can make all the difference in this. Knowing what to ask is essential to ensure you are working with a reputable company—here are the questions we recommend:

<h3how-do-they-handle-emergency-response">1. How Do They Handle Emergency Response?

The faster damage is treated, generally, the less costly and time-consuming the restoration process will be. Inquire about how companies handle emergency responses and what their operating hours are to ensure they are able to get to you quickly.

With our 24-hour emergency line, we can begin our response to natural disasters the moment we get the call. This way, damage gets treated more quickly and business owners can focus on other important recovery tasks to resume operations.

<h3how-do-they-train-their-employees">2. How Do They Train Their Employees?

Quality restoration work comes from quality training, so it is important to ensure the technicians working on your property are qualified and well-trained within the field. The guidelines set forth by the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) are the best in the industry and should be the pinnacle of their technicians’ education.

In addition to training in accordance with IICRC standards, we also provide our technicians with ongoing education and certification opportunities to ensure they are always able to learn and hone their restoration expertise.

<h3how-do-they-pick-their-equipment">3. How Do They Pick Their Equipment?

Technological advancements have impacted the restoration industry heavily, thus it is important for companies to keep their equipment updated.

We choose our equipment based on the IICRC standards, which ensures we are using the best machinery in the industry. All property damages are most effectively treated with the proper tools, which is why this is an important component of our restoration work.

If you’re in need of commercial restoration, do not hesitate to make the call so you can get your business back faster. Our trained experts are here to help 24/7—contact us today.

The Best Tips for Picking a Restoration Company | SERVPRO® of South Nashville

8/26/2019 (Permalink)

Property damage can negatively impact anyone, and for business owners, it can also put their livelihood at risk. FEMA reports that after a disaster, over 40% of businesses are unable to reopen.

Business owners are wise to create an emergency plan and pick a restoration company in order to be prepared should a disaster occur. Working with the right restoration company can help your business reopen faster—here’s how to pick the right one:

<h3know-their-emergency-plan">1. Know Their Emergency Plan

Because damage can grow worse with time, it is best to have damages addressed as soon as possible after discovery. Knowing a company’s emergency plan and their response time will help you make the right decision on who to choose.

Our emergency line is on 247, enabling us to take action as soon as a call comes in. Business owners have many things to focus on following a disaster, so we make sure that worrying about the restoration can be left to us.

<h3know-how-their-staff-is-trained">2. Know How Their Staff Is Trained

The way a company trains its staff is a fairly clear measure of the quality of work they do. A reputable restoration company will know that training is an investment and will want its technicians to remain knowledgeable in the field.

Our technicians’ initial training starts with the industry standards set forth by the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC). Following this, they are provided online learning courses and certification programs to keep advancing their knowledge.

Turn off electricity. Use your breaker box to shut off power in any room that might be at risk for flooding, even if you don’t think the water is likely to get very high. Currents can carry for a variety of reasons so it is better to be prepared.

Prepare appliances. In the case of a shallow flood, appliances such as washers and dryers can be elevated on bricks or stands to protect the internal workings from water damage.

Why choose SERVPRO® of Madison/Goodlettsville for Air Ducts Are Due for Cleaning

6/12/2019 (Permalink)

Living in a humid summer climate, your air conditioning system likely works very hard from May to September. While changing your air filters and performing [regular recommended maintenance](https://www.energy.gov/energysaver/maintaining-your-air-conditioner) are great first steps, sometimes these might not be enough to keep the air in your home healthy.

Because HVAC systems are designed to redistribute air throughout the home, contaminants within the ducts can quickly lead to health problems—and can even lead to your system running less efficiently. If you are unsure whether your system is due for a clean, there are some signs that might point to yes.

### How to Know Your Air Ducts Need Cleaning

Here are four signs that mean [your ducts might be due for a clean](https://nadca.com/resources/blog/4-signs-your-air-ducts-need-cleaning):

*1. You’ve found evidence of mold around your HVAC system.

Because air conditioner systems can develop condensation, it is a perfect place for mold to grow—especially if you live in a humid climate. Because your HVAC system circulates air through the home, it can also spread these mold spores from room to room. It is important to get a thorough and professional clean to keep this problem from getting out of hand, as mold exposure can lead to [serious health problems for your household](https://www.medicinenet.com/mold_exposure/article.htm).

*2. You’ve just renovated your home or live in new construction.

Even if contractors are diligent about cleaning up after themselves, dust and debris can always find a way into the nooks and crannies of your HVAC system. Additionally, the materials used in construction can contain particulates that are not safe to breathe in, which can make this a dangerous scenario.

*3. You feel you’re always dusting.

Everyone has to dust from time to time, but if you are noticing an excessive amount of dust on your surfaces, a duct cleaning may be in order. As dust travels through your HVAC system, your vents will redistribute it around the home. This creates more housework and can also lead to asthma and allergy symptoms.

*4. You’ve seen an increase in heating or cooling costs.

If you have lived in your home for awhile, you should generally be able to estimate your heating and cooling bills from month to month. If you begin seeing bills get noticeably more expensive, it might mean that your system is running inefficiently due to dirty ducts. Severe contamination in an HVAC system will cause it to work much harder to distribute the same amount of air, translating to higher utility bills for homeowners.

*Do any of these signs apply to your home? If so, give [SERVPRO® of Madison/Goodlettsville](https://www.SERVPROmadisongoodlettsville.com/airduct-cleaning) a call so you can have a professional assessment done on your ducts.*

No two fire damage events are the same, and while our highly trained team works to develop a unique plan that is tailored to your needs, the general process remains the same.

Here are the steps that are included in our process:

1. Emergency contact. Once we have been contacted by you, we will ask a series of questions regarding the fire damage, which will help us send out the proper equipment and resources with our team.

2. Inspection and fire damage assessment. Once they arrive on the scene, our team will perform an inspection and test adjoining rooms of the property to determine the extent of fire, smoke and soot damage to help us determine the right plan of action for your property.

3. Immediate board-up and roof-tarp service. Fire damage can compromise windows, walls and roofs, so we make sure that your property is secure and protected from further damage by boarding up any missing windows and walls and placing a tarp on damaged roofs.

4. Water removal and drying (if water damage is present). Since water damage often accompanies fire damage, we’ll begin the process of removing wet items right away. Dehumidifiers and air movers are brought in to remove the remaining water and finish up the drying process.

5. Removal of smoke and soot from all surfaces. We have specialized equipment and techniques to remove the smoke and soot from ceilings, walls and other surfaces.

6. Cleaning and sanitizing. If it is possible, we will clean any restorable items and structures. Industrial air scrubbers and fogging equipment are used to help remove odors.

7. Restoration. This is our final step in getting your property back to pre-fire condition. Restoration can involve minor repairs like replacing drywall, painting and installing new carpet. It could also involve major repairs like reconstruction of damaged areas.

Reaction Steps for Water Damage | SERVPRO® of Madison/Goodlettsville

5/29/2019 (Permalink)

Whether it’s from a hidden leak, sudden flood or broken pipe, discovering water damage anywhere in your home or business can be alarming. However, by staying calm and following a few steps right away, you can get your property back to normal in no time.

Safety First

Determining the safety of your location is the most important thing when you first discover water damage. Turn off the power if need be, make sure floors and ceilings are structurally sound and ensure that there aren’t electrical items that could cause shocks when wet. Never stick around a potentially hazardous area to attempt cleanup.

Professionals Second

After you’re sure the situation is safe, consulting with a professional service should be your next step. With a 24/7 Emergency Service line, the ability to work with your insurance on your behalf and a Master Water Restorer on staff, we can provide a fast and easy cleanup designed to get your life back to normal in a hurry.

Air Flow Third

As you’re waiting on us to arrive, maximize your time by salvaging what you can from the damaged areas. If any items such as furniture, fabric or papers are affected, moving them out can make them more viable for restoration later on.

If the weather outside is dry and not too humid, opening a window and creating airflow can begin evaporating water from surfaces in the room. We’ll tackle the big stuff once we get there, but these small steps can go a long way.

Absorption Fourth

While a mop can’t take the place of professional restoration, removing standing water can certainly have an impact. If you’re able, use a mop or water-rated vacuum cleaner to clear out puddles and standing water throughout the impacted area.

If you’ve just discovered water damage in your home or commercial property, SERVPRO® of Madison/Goodlettsville is here to help. Call us today—we’re faster to any size disaster.

Avoiding Fire Risks in the Kitchen | SERVPRO® of Madison/Goodlettsville

5/23/2019 (Permalink)

Spending time in the kitchen with family and friends is somewhat of a social event. It’s a place for family and friends to gather for quality time and also a place where delicious eats are cooked up. But if we’re not careful, the kitchen is also the space where many home fires occur.

The No. 1 cause of home fires and injuries are cooking fires, and the leading cause of these kitchen fires is unattended cooking.

It has been reported by State Farm that, in 2017, they paid out over $130 million in homeowners insurance claims related to grease and other cooking fires. According to the insurance company, these are the worst states for kitchen fires:

  • North Carolina
  • Texas
  • Pennsylvania
  • California
  • Ohio
  • Illinois
  • Maryland
  • New York
  • Alabama
  • Georgia
Fire Safety Tips for Cooking

Remaining in the kitchen while cooking is not the only fire safety tip you should be following. Here are some other helpful tips to observe while cooking:

1. What type of clothing are you wearing? Does your outfit have long, flowing sleeves or is it big and baggy? It could catch on fire if you aren’t careful while cooking over the stove. It’s best to wear short or close-fitted sleeve shirts and make sure any baggy shirts are tucked in or tied back.

2. What items around the stovetop are flammable? Make sure you don’t have kitchen towels, oven mitts, appliance cords or even curtains too close to the stovetop when cooking. Ideally, anything flammable will be moved away from it.

3. Have you equipped your home with a fire extinguisher in or near the kitchen? Hopefully you have at least one fire extinguisher located in your home, ideally one that is near your kitchen. Make sure you know how to properly use the extinguisher, just in case it is ever needed.

4. How are you disposing of hot grease after use? The grease may not be on fire, but it could be hot enough to cause something in the trash to burn. You should let the grease cool a bit and then dispose of it in an old coffee can. Also, know the smoke points of the oils you cook with. Be sure to never subject a low-smoke point oil to high heat when cooking, as it could catch fire.

5. Is there a fire escape plan in place for your home? Thinking about the worst-case scenario is never fun, but it’s better to be prepared rather than unprepared if an emergency were to occur. Go over exit routes and designated meeting points with your family, making sure that everyone knows what to do.

Fire safety in the kitchen is an absolute necessity, as it can help prevent dangerous and destructive cooking fires. If your home has experienced damage from a cooking fire, know that SERVPRO® of Madison/Goodlettsville is here to make it “Like it never even happened.”
